Bode to face off against tennis great Steffi Graf

Daily news Staff Report

Two-time world champion and reigning World Cup giant slalom title holder Bode Miller will take to Center Court at the U.S. Open’s Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day against tennis great Steffi Graf on Saturday in a four-game exhibition. The match will take place at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.”She hasn’t played on the tour for awhile so my strategy will be to make her run, get her to go right, then go left, go right again, and wear her out,” said Miller, arguably the U.S. Ski Team’s most famous athlete. “I’m up for a good game and know we’ll challenge each other. It should be fun.”Prior to the battle of the seasons — winter athlete vs. summer athlete – Miller and Graf will participate in the Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day in the morning, providing on-court pointers and nutritional tips to aspiring young athletes. Both athletes are sponsored by Barilla Pasta, which is co-sponsoring the Arthur Ashe Kids Day.The Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day stadium show will be broadcast nationally by CBS on Sunday at 11 a.m. prior to the U.S. Open preview show. For Miller, who was an all-state tennis player at Carrabassett Valley Academy in Maine, Saturday’s match will give him a window into a dream he had growing up.”I would have loved to play tennis professionally,” he said. “I’m sure if I grew up in one of the hotbeds for tennis like California or Florida, where it is really competitive instead of next to a ski area, who knows? Instead, I wound up testing myself against strong skiers as a kid. No complaints though.”
