Breck Powder 8 winners take fourth in world comp

BLUE RIVER, B.C. – The winners of last month’s Powder 8 contest in Breckenridge took on a slew of international competition to take fourth in the Powder 8 World Competition last weekend at Mike Wiegle’s Helicopter Skiing Resort in British Columbia.

Breck resident Tom Riggins and his Powder 8 teammate, Tom Truss of Alta, Utah, went up against the best Powder 8 skiers from Europe, Canada and the United States.

“It’s super competitive,” said Rick Ascher, competitor and organizer of the Breck Powder 8 contest. “There’s teams from Austria, France … all over the world. Those two are pretty feisty. They won (the Breck contest) one time before. They’re always fun to ski against.”

Powder 8 competitors are judged on synchronicity, dynamic skiing, roundness of turns and symmetry of tracks.

Truss and Riggins won the Breck contest March 26 despite strong winds and variable snow conditions on Peak 7.
