Breckenridge Ascent Series: New year, new races

It’s a new year, and time for another Breckenridge Ascent Series.

The series will kick off with two morning uphill races, with three evening races following. The final two uphill races may include a downhill component, which includes transitions between the uphill climb and skiing downhill.

“We’ll see how it takes and continue it into all of 2014’s races,” said Brian Schaefer, Breckenridge Sports and Special Events coordinator.

Snowshoes, alpine touring setups, telemark skis, splitboards, Nordic skis and randonee race gear are all permitted in the race. They will be divided into heavy and lightweight setups for prizes, which will be awarded to the top female and top male in each category.

The primary race sponsor is Mountain Outfitters, which has retained the duty even under new ownership.

Registration is open to 150 racers, but the average number sits around 45-60 racers.

“We’d like to keep building it to the (summer’s) trail-running series size),” Schaefer said. “There’s more to skiing than just the downhill. These are folks who want to skin and do ski mountaineering. It’s a great way to experience the mountain, see the mountain in a different way.”

A raffle held after each race will include items from Sun Logic – hats, beanies and goggles – as well as $100 gift certificates to Mountain Outfitters. La Sportiva has donated skis to be given away to anyone who competes in the series or the final race, and Mountain Outfitters will be putting items in the pool as well.

The finale party is slated for April 10 following the Peak 7 race at Seven’s or the T-Bar restaurant.

“It’s a great way to get people out together and do something different than just going downhill,” Schaefer said.
