Breck’s McGahey replaces Cass as CU football announcer

Daily News staff report

Replacing a legend is no small task, but that is the one being asked of Breckenridge native Conor McGahey as he prepares to take over for Alan Cass as public address announcer for the University of Colorado.

Cass served as the voice of Folsom Field and Coors Events Center for nearly 50 years. He was recognized during the CU men’s basketball game in March, as he decided to step away from the microphone and retire.

McGahey, who will begin as Cass’ successor for football games, began announcing sporting events when he was 15 years old. He announced his first college event when he was 19 and began as Alan Roach’s backup for the Colorado Avalanche when he was 20. He still fills in for Roach with the Avalanche in addition to announcing hockey, basketball and lacrosse at the University of Denver, where he graduated with a B.A. in broadcast journalism in 2007.

He is in charge of game operations for the Avs and is host of “Avalanche Live” during their home games with Altitude Sports and Entertainment. McGahey also works with the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League.

McGahey filled in for Cass for a CU football game in the past and it was a memorable one: the Buffs’ 27-24 upset of No. 3 Oklahoma in 2007.

Like Cass, who is a lifelong Buffs fan, McGahey has also watched CU play since childhood. He was in attendance at Folsom Field in 1994 when Rashaan Salaam surpassed the 2,000-yard mark against Iowa State.
