Card sharks meet single-track

BRECKENRIDGE – You won’t see many cigars around the table in this poker game.

For mountain bikers who like to ride at their own pace and, in so doing, maintain their poker faces, the 15th annual Poker Ride in Breckenridge is right up their alley.

“It’s such a great event,” said Chris Hart of Great Adventure Sports, which has taken over sponsorship of the ride from longtime former organizer The Knorr House. “There’s plenty of races in the area, but there’s a lot of people who aren’t into racing. This is just something for people that want to ride around with a bunch of other people and just have a good time.”

The Poker Ride begins between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Great Adventure Sports in Breckenridge, and takes riders up the Flume Trail single-tracks to Horseshoe Gulch, and back to Breck. The ride is a 10-15 mile loop and includes five checkpoints, where bikers receive a card to build their poker hand.

Lunch will be provided by the Hearthstone at the Riverwalk Center at 1 p.m., and prizes will be given to the rider with the best poker hand as well as the worst.

Registration for the ride is $25 at Great Adventure, and includes lunch, a T-Shirt and giveaways. All proceeds benefit the Summit Fat Tire Society, the organization responsible for maintaining most of Summit County’s trails.
