CDOT correction: Portions of Vail Pass Recpath remain closed

EAGLE AND SUMMIT COUNTIES — Correcting an earlier release, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that sections of the Vail Pass Recpath remain closed. An earlier report stated that the recpath would fully open Thursday at 2 p.m.

C-Dot was able to clear the section of the bike trail between east Vail and the summit of Vail Pass, as of Thursday, but the section from the summit of Vail Pass to Copper mountain remains closed until further notice.

“It will open whenever nature takes its course,” said CDOT spokesperson Bob Wilson. Maintenance crews need to let the snow melt naturally on that portion of the trail, due to trail bridges that cannot support the weight of snow removal equipment, says Wilson.

CDOT urges cyclists to ride with caution on open portions, as the path still has a few icy spots. Additionally, more ice may form with snowmelt, if the area receives colder temperatures or inclement weather.

Along with CDOT maintenance crews, engineering crews are preparing for summer project that will resurface the path from Copper to the summit of Vail Pass. They will also repair a timber bridge to help improve safety for riders. The project is slated to start in late May or early June. Work crews repaired the western side of the trail last year.

CDOT expects the full recpath to be open some time in mid-June. Riders will have to contend with construction.
