CFPA Fire Hose Relay today at Arapahoe Basin

It might look a little funny at first glance, but at its core, the Colorado Fire Protection Association Fire Hose Relay fills a serious need.

Starting today at 9:30 a.m. at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, teams of five will make their way through a 15-gate giant slalom course. Two runs, the lowest combined time wins.

Oh, and they have to race wearing fire helmets and bunker coats and with each racer holding onto a 50-foot length of fire hose.

The fifth annual event donates 100 percent of the entry fees to The Children’s Hospital Burn Camps Program, an organization created “to meet the psychological and rehabilitation needs of the child and family following a burn injury,” according the hospital’s website.

Registration ranges from $250 for an unsponsored team to $1,000 for a sponsored team in the “gold” division.

A-Basin is donating the hill space to the event this year, and the races are scheduled to run until 11:30 a.m.
