Arapahoe Basin Ski Area may have been the first ski area in the country to open for seven days a week on Oct. 19, but two days prior, up the road in Leadville, Colorado Mountain College opened its terrain park.

CMC-Leadville students studying within the college’s Ski Area Operations curriculum, as well as Ski Area Operations faculty, made enough snow in mid-October to cover Dutch Henry Hill. On Oct. 17, the facility became the first terrain park in Colorado to open for the 2018-19 ski and ride season.

That said, the facility, located off of Highway 24 in Leadville on the campus’s north side,is not open to the public.

Each year, ski area operations students at CMC-Leadville learn about and operate the college’s snowmaking equipment at Dutch Henry Hill, where the local youth team, Cloud City Ski Club, trains.

The college’s Ski Area Operations curriculum covers technical skills and hands-on training with required on-mountain internships. Program graduates have moved on to careers in ski area grooming, lift maintenance, management and design, mountain operations and risk/safety management. Those pursuing the associate of applied science also have the option at CMC to earn certificates in ropeway maintenance technician, ski patrol operations, or slope and trail maintenance.
