Collard wins, Vawter-Beaird loses first match since Dec. 3

ELIZABETH – Perhaps Andrew Vawter-Beaird will stay at 125 pounds after all.The Summit High School senior had lost only one match all year at that weight before deciding to drop down to 119 pounds last week, the same weight at which he advanced to the state tournament last winter.Vawter-Beaird dropped seven pounds in two days, then felt fatigued and flat as he lost his first match since Dec. 3 at Elizabeth on Wednesday. “I think we’re figuring out it might not have been the best call,” SHS coach Jim Melvin said. “He just didn’t have any energy.”Vawter-Beaird still sits at 14-2 overall this year, and is in good shape for the postseason. It’s a safe bet the 9-7 decision will help motivate him in the weeks to come, too.Senior Stephan Collard, meanwhile, won by pin at 135 pounds in his first match since Dec. 17. He’d been sidelined by an ankle injury since then. Another senior, Tim Gurule, was pinned in the second period at 140 pounds. SHS only entered three wrestlers in the dual meet.Devon O’Neil can be contacted at (970) 668-3998, ext. 13630, or at
