Colorado Avalanche tops Calgary, 6-3
CALGARY, alberta – What’s this, victory? On the road? One that included goals scored, more than one even? And, scored by their highest paid player, Paul Stastny?
For the Avalanche, it all seemed too good to be true Thursday night, but it wasn’t. The Avs used two late Stastny goals in beating the Calgary Flames 6-3 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Avs scored three goals in the game’s final 2:48 in getting their first road victory of the season, one that snapped a three-game losing streak.
The Avs went on the power play with 2:48 left in the third, after Matt Duchene was taken down off the rush by Flames defender Mark Giordano.
Stastny got to a puck in the left crease and kept jamming at it before it finally slipped past Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff with 2:39 left.
It would have been a lot nicer to have gone into the third period with a one-goal lead, as the Avs were just 18 seconds from doing.
John Mitchell’s second goal of the game at 16:58 of the second, after a nice steal and setup pass from behind the net by Chuck Kobasew, gave Colorado its first lead of the four-game road trip.
