A client shows off her catch during a recent trip with Breckenridge Outfitters. Hpper dropper season has arrived in the High Country and Right fly-fishing guides suggest hopper patterns with fairly small dropper flys (16-20).

Summer is here and fishing is picking up fast!

Hopper dropper time is also here. Smaller hopper patterns are starting to turn fish, so time to get into some of those beloved hopper patterns, such as Chubby Chernobyls, Panty Dropper Hoppers and Hippie Stompers. Do not be scared to throw hoppers at fish that are not rising — fish in the Blue River have been actively chasing and hitting hoppers.

Double dry rigs have been fishing well on the Colorado, Arkansas and Eagle rivers. Dropper flys should be fairly small sizes (16-20), but they’re effective. Nymphing deep holes will still rope fish that are not feeding on the top water.

The Colorado north of Silverthorne has been fishing great, even with the fire, so fish Pumphouse access down to Gore Canyon, or fish up into the canyon. Local waters like the Blue have been fishing well, even with the pressure of holiday crowds. The South Platte has been producing fish, but the mosquitos have been a deterrent — remember bug spray. Have fun out there and enjoy tight lines.
