USA Pro Challenge cycle race organizers announced the 2013 race route Thursday. The race, in its third year and considered the nation’s most challenging cycling competition, covers nearly 600 miles, winding its way over mountain passes, through towns and cities in the heart of the Rockies from Aug. 19-25.

Starting in Aspen, the seven-stage course will include stops in Brekenridge, Steamboat Springs, Beaver Creek, Vail, Loveland and Fort Collins, before finishing in Denver with a circuit race at Stage 7. This year’s event features the return of the Vail individual time stage. The race will also include crossing the highest point of any pro cycling race when it crosses over Independence Pass. Also noteworthy, Stage 2 begins in Aspen and ends the day on Main Street in Breckenridge. Stage 3 kicks off the next morning in downtown Breck and heads up Highway 9 to Steamboat.

While teams have not been announced, the race is expected to draw a number of pros from the U.S. and around the world.

“The best in the sport will be racing through Colorado communities for what will be an epic week in professional cycling.” said Shawn Hunter, CEO of the challenge, in a statement posted on the USA Pro Challenge website.

“In looking at the route we have outlined, each day is a challenge, which will create some amazing racing.” said Scott in an article on Outside magazine’s website.
