Cycle the Summit: Breckenridge to Frisco on the Peaks Trail

weekender staff report

By the Numbers

Type: Out and back, dirt road, singletrack

Season: June – October

Distance: 13.8 miles

Rating: Difficult

Time: 1-2 hours

The Peaks Trail is a technical route that connects the towns of Breckenridge and Frisco. Much of the trail is at high elevation along the Tenmile Range. This loop describes the Gold Hill Trail cutoff and uses the paved Blue River recpath to return to Breckenridge. For a longer route, riders can continue on the Peaks Trail all the way to Frisco. Out-and-backs from Frisco are also a popular option. The Peaks Trail can be accessed in Frisco from either the Mount Royal Trailhead — which adds a fun singletrack section to the route — or Miners Creek Road.

Parking:

Park at either the Breckenridge Peaks Trailhead — adjacent to the Peak 7 base — or at Zach’s Stop/Second Street Trailhead in Frisco. Riders can incorporate a shuttle with the Summit Stage to avoid using the recpath.

Description:

Start at the Watson Trailhead/South Gondola Lot (just south of the gondola in Breckenridge). Follow Park Avenue south to Ski Hill Road and turn right on the paved recpath. Follow Ski Hill Road until the recpath ends and follow the road as it passes the base of Peaks 8 and 7, then turns to dirt at the Peaks Trailhead. Turn left on the Peaks Trail for 4.8 miles until you reach the Gold Hill/Colorado Trail junction. Turn right to the Gold Hill Trail to the paved Blue River recpath (3 miles). Turn right and travel south for 4 miles until the pathway returns to the gondola and the trailhead (13.8 miles total). For the longer route, remain on Peaks Trail downhill to Miners Creek Road. Turn right and follow to the paved recpath in Frisco. Turn right and follow the recpath signs back to Breckenridge. This option adds 7 miles for a total of 20.8 miles. The Peaks Trail is one of the county’s most popular mountain bike options.
