Disc golf community splinters

FRISCO – For the past six years, the competitive disc golf community in Summit County was a united force, offering Wednesday night tournaments at the Frisco Peninsula course.

This year, the community has splintered, with two groups organizing alternating Wednesday night leagues and competing for players.

AB Ski and Sport in Frisco has historically worked with High Country Disc Golf to run the Wednesday evening series with categories for professionals, amateurs, juniors and women. Last year, there were eight tournaments from June to August.

This year, without contacting AB owners Lori and Steve Davis, High Country Disc Golf’s Kevin Metzler began organizing a competing league, with eight Wednesday night events on the Peninsula. The first was June 4.

“I guess this year (Metzler) decided to be bigger and badder,” Lori Davis said. “He decided to do his own thing.”

Davis still plans to hold tournaments this season but will reduce the number of events from eight to six and the entry fee from $10 to $5 for everyone but the pros. The High Country series costs $10 for all players.

“We really want to get people out there, and we think by making it more affordable, we’ll be able to do that,” Davis said. “That’s what’s important, getting more people into the sport.

“I feel Kevin’s tournaments are geared toward the pros,” she added. “I’d rather make them more accessible.”

Metzler could not be reached for comment.

The AB tournaments begin Wednesday and will be held every other Wednesday through Aug. 20. Start time is 5:30 p.m. with an after-party at Barkley’s in Frisco. Cash will be given to the top professionals, and other prizes will go to the winners of the amateur, junior and women’s divisions.

Registration will be taken at AB Ski and Sport until 3 p.m. the day of the tournament and up until start time at the Peninsula. Call AB at (970) 668-5269 for more information.

Meanwhile, the High Country Disc Golf tournaments will run on alternating Wednesdays through Sept. 10. Call Pioneer Sports in Frisco at (970) 668-3668 for more information.

Peak One Championships start today

High Country Disc Golf will host the Peak One Championships today and Sunday at the Frisco Peninsula course. The event attracts some of the region’s best professionals, and registration is maxed out at 110 players. The first of four rounds begins at 8:30 a.m. today, and play continues through Sunday afternoon. An awards party is set for Sunday at Barkley’s in Frisco.
