Durango cycling veteran wins race up Mount Washington

The Associated Press

PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. – Cycling veteran Ned Overend has won the annual Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb.

Overend, of Durango, celebrated his 56th birthday by winning Saturday’s race to the 6,288-foot summit of the highest peak in the Northeast. His time was 55 minutes, three seconds.

The top women’s finisher was 48-year-old Marti Shea of Marblehead, Mass., at one hour, four minutes and 12 seconds.

Overend won the first World Mountain Biking Championship in 1990. He’s won the U.S. national off-road biking championship six times.

Shea won Newton’s Revenge, Mount Washington’s other bike race, earlier this summer. She finished in exactly the same time Saturday.

Sponsored by Polartec, with additional support from others, the race is the primary annual fundraiser for the Tin Mountain Conservation Center in Albany, N.H.
