Tuesday night’s girls’ soccer game against Elizabeth High School was hard to swallow for Summit High head coach Tommy Gogolen. Though he was happy with his team’s play in the 2-0 loss, Gogolen felt that it was a game the Tigers could have won.

“This was a tough one, because tonight was one we definitely could have had,” the coach said.

The Tiger defense played solidly all night, but Summit was unable to put anything past the Elizabeth netminder.

“We had nine shots on goal, and unfortunately, none of them hit the back of the net,” Gogolen said.

For the second-straight game, the Tigers were without their regular starting goaltender. Sophomore Kayla Gray filled in for the first half between the pipes, before moving up to play striker in the second. Then senior Lara Silven took over, making four “big saves,” according to Gogolen, in her first-ever appearance in goal.

“Both of them did a very good job filling in for us,” Gogolen said.

Gogolen also credited Chelsea Rybak with having an exceptional game. The senior has been battling foot injuries all season.

“She really played well,” Gogolen said. “She battled her heart out tonight, and I’m really proud of her.”

The Tigers (2-9) now enter a critical stretch as their season winds down. Summit travels to play Wheat Ridge on Thursday, then has four games in four days from April 27-30.

Gogolen is excited at the Tigers’ opportunity to improve, especially with the team finally being able to practice outside for the first time all season today at the Summit Middle School’s baseball field.

“We really need to keep working on winning 50-50 balls and possessing the ball,” the coach said. “We want to make sure the girls all keep their heads up and finish out strong.”

The Tigers match on Thursday is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
