Fiala finishes a disappointing 39th in super-G

BEAVER CREEK – Frisco resident Jake Fiala didn’t have his best day at Thursday’s Birds of Prey super-G. Still nursing an ankle injury that kept him on crutches for much of the fall, Fiala finished in a tie for 39th, 2.68 seconds back of winner Stephan Georgl. Fiala started second of the 62 racers and didn’t make any major mistakes, but it wasn’t to be. “I just don’t have the speed right now,” he said. “It’s frustrating. I’m switching things up every day, trying to get it dialed in.” Fiala finished 13th at last year’s Beaver Creek super-G, a career best in his five years on the World Cup. Thursday, however, despite a course that favors early start numbers, he couldn’t get it going. After he crossed the finish line he hung his head in disappointment. “It’s tough to deal with,” he said. “I was hoping here at home it’d be better.” The 29-year-old Summit High School graduate will try to rebound in today’s downhill, which starts at 11 a.m.Devon O’Neil can be contacted at (970) 668-3998, ext. 231, or at
