Firecracker 50 nearing its field limit

BRECKENRIDGE – Registration for the fourth annual Firecracker 50 is still open. Based on a record turnout of 550 racers last year, event organizers have set a field limit of 600 racers for 2004. As of this morning, race organizers at Maverick Sports were reporting 379 registered participants.”We’re ahead of where we were at this point last year,” said Mark McCormack. The race challenges competitors to a 25-mile loop through the trails and jeep roads east of Breckenridge. The event is open to solo participants riding two laps or teams of two who ride one lap each.”If we allow it to grow to 1,000 racers, it will get too crowded,” McCormack said. “It could grow to that, but we just don’t need it to.” The event features over $8,000 in cash and prizes for finishers, as well as a post-race awards party and barbecue held at Carter Park. For more information, including a course map, visit To register, head to A Racer’s Edge, Great Adventure Sports or Mountain Outfitters, which are all located in Breckenridge. Online registration is also available online at under a search for “Firecracker 50.”
