Firecracker registration now open

Although it may be hard to focus on mountain biking when the snow is (finally) piling up on the slopes, registration for the Firecracker 50 Mountain Bike race in Breckenridge has already opened up.

Serving as the USA Cycling Marathon MTB National Championships, the race is held annually on the Fourth of July, starting and finishing in Breck’s Carter Park.

Race organizer Jeff Westcott of Maverick Sports Promotions said the race will fill up fast, so those who want to compete against the best in the country should sign up early.

The race is open to 750 contestants and will sell out.

The Firecracker is a 50-mile race through the trails in and around Breck, and 14 national titles will be handed out to the category winners, including a new men’s and women’s singlespeed national title.

In last year’s race, the husband-and-wife duo of Jeremy Horgan Kobelski and Heather Irmiger blitzed the men’s and women’s fields, respectively.

Each year, the race draws some of the top names in the sport, as well as a slew of local Colorado riders.
