Competing on some home slopes, the Summit County Special Olympics team had an impressive performance in the Special Olympics Colorado 2010 Winter Games at Copper Mountain on Wednesday and Thursday.

Five athletes from the Summit squad earned seven medals in the alpine skiing competitions that consisted of both slalom and giant slalom races.

Ryan Bennet earned the team’s top finish of the Games, winning a gold medal in slalom. Bennet also finished sixth in the GS.

K.C. Farmer of the Summit team served as the MC for the Games’ opening ceremonies on Wednesday night, and then went on to claim the bronze medal in both the slalom and GS.

Kelly Faber snagged a silver in slalom to go along with a fourth-place finish in the GS, and Kate Strahlo claimed silver in the GS and bronze in the slalom.

Vital LaRocque won the bronze medal in the GS and finished fourth in the slalom.

In all, nearly 500 athletes competed at Copper Mountain in six different sports. It was the 22nd straight year that Copper hosted the event.
