Five Peaks ski mountaineering race in Breckenridge postponed due to extreme avalanche danger

The annual Five Peaks ski mountaineering race at Breckenridge Ski Resort has been postponed from Saturday to Saturday, April 27 due to extreme avalanche danger.

Race director Jeff Westcott of Maverick Sports Promotions said in an email to racers the decision was made due to safety concerns.

“We are experiencing unprecedented conditions here in Summit County and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) has labeled our zone extreme,” Westcott said in the email.

Westcott added in the email that the new date of April 27 provides a great shot at long-course racer getting to the summit of all five of Breckenridge Ski Resort’s peaks.

“This is no guarantee mind you,” Westcott said, “but the snow pack typically stabilizes by then.”
