Two former Summit High rugby players were honored last week after the conclusion of the women’s collegiate rugby season.

Kyle Armstrong of Penn State University and Jozy Gessner of Colorado State were both named to the Women’s Collegiate All-American First Team.

The teams – selected by a number of U.S. National Team coaches – were decided based on play in the season’s playoffs and national championships, as well as video submissions from coaches.

Armstrong, who was a two-time member of the U-19 U.S. National Team (2006-07), helped the Nittany Lions to a national title this season. Penn State finished the season with a 20-5 record and topped both Virginia Tech and the University of Delaware on its way to the national title game. In the final, the Nittany Lions won a closely contested rematch with Navy, a team Penn State lost 41-0 to earlier in the season. The Nittany Lions won 24-7 in the final.

Armstrong was one of four Penn State players to be named to the first team.

Gessner, who was the Colorado player of the year in 2008 at SHS, had an impressive freshman season with the Rams. Although her team didn’t have quite the same success as her former Tiger teammate, CSU was one of the better teams in the region all season.

Last summer, Gessner was the captain of the U-20 U.S. National Team.
