Four locals headed to Nordic Jr. nationals

Fresh off impressive performances in the Colorado state high school championships last week, four Summit County Nordic skiers will take on the best in the country at the Junior National Championships in Minneapolis, starting on Sunday.

Tucker McCrerey, Sam Piehl, Jackson Hill and Julia Hayes will represent the Rocky Mountain Division in a four-event competition over six days. All four skier qualified for the event through their exceptional seasons this winter.

Just a junior at Summit High, McCrerey was an alternate on the U.S. team that traveled to the junior world championships in January and is considered among the very best in Colorado, if not the entire Rocky Mountain region. He won both the classic and skate races at state.

Hill and Piehl were both all-state skiers this winter for SHS, and Julia Hayes is arguably the strongest girls high school skier in the state.

After the opening ceremonies Sunday, there will be a sprint race Monday. Then, the skiers will compete in a classic race on Wednesday and both a skate race and a relay event on March 11.
