Full weekend on tap at S’thorne Paddle Fest

Jason Starr

All things whitewater will be on display Saturday and Sunday at the Silverthorne Pavilion during the first-ever Paddle Fest.

The event will be hosted by Nathrop-based Colorado Kayak Supply, which also operates Summit Kayak in Silverthorne, and will be a combination exposition and sale.

“We’ve had several sales and preseason events every year between the two shops,” said Colorado Kayak Supply co-owner Chad Gorby. “We thought it would be more effective and better for the customer if we put all our energy into one event.”

In addition to more than a dozen manufacturer’s booths, the fest will include two guest speakers and the Summit County premier of the Teton Gravity Research whitewater film “Valhalla.”

All types of boats and paddling accessories will be on sale by representatives of the sport’s top manufacturers. The newest products will be discounted 10 to 20 percent, Gorby said, and older models will have deeper discounts.

Paddling activist Michael Giamellaro will present a slide show based on his attempt to paddle the Mississippi, Columbia and Colorado river drainages from headwaters to ocean. Calling it the “Three Waters Project,” Giamellaro is trying to raise awareness of America’s biggest and most threatened rivers. All three drainages begin at Three Waters Mountain in Wyoming. His presentation is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The second speaker, Kristen Read, will present slides on the Futaleufu River in Chile in an effort to support economic alternatives to a potential dam in the river. Called FutaFriends, the slide show begins at 2:30 p.m and 6:30 p.m. Saturday and at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The film “Valhalla” will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday. It is the second kayak film for Teton Gravity Research, the Jackson Hole, Wyo.,-based company most known for its ski movies.

It features footage from Alaska, Colorado, Montana, California and Minnesota as well as Norway, Iceland, Croatia and Canada. Moviegoers have the chance to win a week-long kayak adventure for two to Iceland.
