Girls’ soccer opens season with 4-1 road win

The Summit High girls’ soccer team fell behind 1-0 early Thursday afternoon in a match at Jefferson High School.

For a team that struggled through much of last season, it would’ve been easy to concede the loss, to go through the motions not expecting a comeback.

The Tigers opted for the more difficult route.

Summit scored four unanswered goals, three coming off the foot of junior Robyn Kresge, and started its season with a decisive 4-1 win.

“Everyone just stepped it up,” assistant coach Emilie Theobold said of her team. ” … For our first game, they played really well. Everyone hustled a lot, and we were able to get everyone into the game.”

Junior Jessica Malknecht had the other Tiger tally and also picked up two assists in the game.

The defense may have been the reason Summit won, though. Sophomores Cora Zimmerman and Nicole Chandler anchored the Tiger backline and goalie Hailey Curnutte made four saves.

Summit plays again on Wednesday at Clear Creek. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
