Summit senior Sam Dudick scored three goals, but, in the end, a plethora of penalties did in the Summit High lacrosse team on Wednesday.

The Tigers gave up six goals in man-down situations and lost 12-6 at Golden.

“The kids played with them, but we probably had about 15 penalties,” SHS head coach Michael O’Neill said.

O’Neill said most of his team’s penalties were unnecessary and ultimately cost the Tigers a chance at their second straight win to start the season.

The weather conditions didn’t help much either.

A snowstorm hit Golden right as the teams began play Wednesday, forcing the officials to use an orange ball for the second half so players could spot it among the falling snow.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” O’Neill said.

Playing through the weather, the Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after sophomore Nick Raymond scored the game’s first goal.

Summit trailed only 6-3 at halftime and 9-6 heading into the fourth quarter, but Golden scored the game’s final three goals and slowly pulled away for the win.

Senior Michael Daniels and junior Dylan Horan each scored goals for Summit. Zach Dobson and Shamus O’Neill had two assists apiece.

“For only being the second game of the year, it wasn’t a poor showing,” O’Neill said. “We did some good things, but they were a strong team. We had a couple bad breaks and just couldn’t stay in it.”

Senior Brady Sandsmark played the first three quarters between the pipes for Summit, while freshman Garret Tousey finished off the last few minutes.

The Tigers (1-1) are back in action on Friday, when they travel to take on Green Mountain High School at 4 p.m.

“It’ll be a similar level of play (to Golden) and should be a good test,” O’Neill said. “I feel good about Friday, though. The kids played hard (Wednesday) but did some stupid things. I think we’ll do better Friday.”
