Golf tips from the pros: Tee the ball higher for a more consistent shot

Helping your junior golf hit better off the tee can be as simple as teeing up the ball higher and having the young golfer approach the ball with a more forward stance. This tip can also serve fullsize golfers.

There are two simple steps you can apply to improve your junior golfer’s setup, so that he or she can hit the ball higher, further and with more confidence than ever before. This tip might also be handy for the full-grown golfer looking for a little more consistency from the tee.

First, tee the ball higher, and second, have the golfer align himself or herself with the ball placed in a more forward stance. Here in the High Country, the ball flies farther and straighter thanks to the elevation; it’s just physics. Just imagine the look on the child’s face when he or she hits a golf ball higher and farther than ever before.

Next time you make it to the driving range with your child, show him or her how to tee the ball up a little bit higher. Half the ball should be above the driver clubface when the club is resting on the ground behind the ball. This improves the likelihood that he or she will make solid contact and lift the ball up into the air.

Now that the ball is higher up on the tee, add the second step, moving the ball forward so it lines up with the inside of the front foot. Doing so will allow for the clubface to strike the ball on an upward trajectory. This adds lift and will send the ball high into the Rocky Mountain sky.
