Great Adventure Sports cruises into rec hockey postseason

BRECKENRIDGE – Great Adventure Sports slammed the door shut on the regular season as they defeated Eric’s, 6-1, in a lopsided B League recreational hockey matchup Monday night.

Great Adventure Sports (7-4-1) secured a spot in the playoffs with Monday’s win.

Unable to match Great Adventure’s speed, Eric’s barely moved the puck past the blue line in the first period, getting only one shot on net. Great Adventure kept Eric’s busy on defense, and goalie John Champoux turned away 21 shots in the first period alone.

Despite Great Adventure’s constant offensive pressure, Eric’s only trailed by 2 after the first two periods. Brian Chrison scored Great Adventure’s first goal eight minutes in, assisted by Tom Daniels and Mark Bruner. Tory Hauser made it 2-0 midway through the second period.

The energy Eric’s expended on defense took its toll in the third, and Great Adventure went on a scoring tear with goals by Daniels, Chrison, Shawn Paurod and Nick Farkouh. Hauser, Scott Yule, and Jeff Saiquist were all credited with assists.

Eric’s got the last word with a late third period goal by Jay Koenekampe, who batted in a flubbed save to get the team on the board.

“It’s always good to get a non-shutout goal,” Koenekampe said.

Champoux finished the game with 45 saves.

Third-seeded Great Adventure Sports took on second seed Mi Casa in the semifinals late Sunday night. The winner will meet Spy Optics in the championship game tonight.

Eric’s will miss out on postseason play, having ended up in second-to-last place in the eight team league, but players said they were happy with their level of play this winter.

“It was an excellent season,” Koenekampe said. “The whole time, we were having fun.”
