Harrell wins national moguls crown

Summit Daily/Mark Fox

It was quite a save. Local 13-year-old skier Kaitlyn Harrell soared down her final run at Steamboat Springs Ski Area in the J3 National Championships on March 11, carrying her now-customary blazing speed. But when she hit the final kicker, she went off balance. Her left ski twisted in front of her arm while she attempted a backflip iron cross.

Somehow, she landed – right on top of the podium.

While Harrell missed out on an overall top-three finish in the 18-and-under field by just 0.14 points, she took gold in her J3 age group, earning her a national title. She was fifth overall.

Team Breckenridge Sports Club teammate Dylan Walczyk was fifth in the boys’ dual moguls competition and wound up 20th in singles.

J3 Lindsey Eckhoff was ninth overall in duals, and Kira Wright also competed.

Next up, Walczyk, Wright and Bruce Perry, Jr., will all head to Stratton, Vt., for the U.S. National Championships March 25-27.
