DEVON O'NEILsummit daily news

ENGLEWOOD – Hannah Harvey’s ninth goal of the season wasn’t enough to prevent her team from losing its second straight match Thursday, as the Summit High School girls soccer team was defeated 2-1 at Englewood. The host Pirates scored twice in the first half before Harvey eliminated 50 percent of their lead with a goal in the 62nd minute, set up by a pass from Kealy Bowers. The Tigers surged toward an equalizer late in the match but eventually ran out of time.”I swear if the game was five minutes longer we would’ve tied,” SHS coach Stephanie Johnson said. “It was one of the games you don’t want to end. Just really exciting, really fun to watch.”The Tigers dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the 4A Jeffco League, as they chase an above-.500 record this season.Johnson credited goalie Emily Hawkins for having an “incredible game,” and also said Libby Helmer, Emily George, Rachel Burnett and Emma Koenig played well against the Pirates. Burnett, in particular, “shut down” Englewood’s top striker in the second half, Johnson said.Summit next plays Saturday at St. Mary’s Academy.Devon O’Neil can be contacted at (970) 668-4633, or at doneil@summitdaily.com.
