There’s a reason the Brits are some of the finest soccer players in the world, and it comes down to practice, practice, practice.

From June 15-19, the Denver branch of Challenger Sports has paired with High Country Soccer Association to bring a British-style soccer camp to Frisco.

The weeklong Summit County camp features three sessions for youth players: the one-hour First Kicks camp for 3-year-olds ($92); the 1.5-hour Mini Soccer camp for 4- and 5-year-olds ($113); and the three-hour Half Day camp for players between 6 and 11 years old ($154).

There’s also a special afternoon camp, dubbed Golden Goal, for 2015 High Country soccer players. It runs Monday through Thursday for two hours daily and costs $55.

The camp already has 150 participants, but there’s room for more. Registration is available through the Challenger website until the first day of camp.

Challenger runs camps across the country, and, this summer, vice president Grant Hall expects nearly 12,000 kids will attend 250 camps across the Rocky Mountain region, including Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.

It’s a testament to the British style. The Challenger coaches focus on building a better player from the ground up with ball handling drills, pass-and-shoot drills and agility training. Everything comes back to the camp motto: develop individual skills through 1,000 touches per day.

But the camp isn’t just international in name. Every day ends with a World Cup tournament — players study up on their country colors, capital city and flag during the week — and Hall’s roster of 1,100 coaches includes experts from Britain and Brazil.

In Summit County, the 10 Brits will stay with local families, much like club players who live with host families for off-season training.

“That’s really our model across the nation,” Hall says. “The guys love to be part of the community and, of course, explore beautiful Summit County.”

Challenger returns to Summit with a Brazil soccer camp from July 27-31. Registration and additional info are found on the Challenger website.
