Homecoming Spotlight: Amelia Meier anchors the bars

Richard Chittick

Amelia Meier loves her fans. When she sticks a landing or nails a routine, she knows she can count on the crowd to let her know that she did a good job.

“We have really supportive parents,” Meier said during Monday night’s match at Summit High School.

Despite only being four weeks into her second year of high school, the 16-year-old gymnast has already made it to the varsity level in uneven bars and vault, and is progressing rapidly as a junior varsity competitor in beam and floor.

Meier has been a gymnast since she was 5 years old. Her strongest routine is the uneven bars, where she consistently hits state qualifying scores of 8.0 or better.

“She’s our anchor on bars,” head coach Beth Flaherty said.

An avid snowboarder, Meier lives in Breckenridge with her parents and her older sister, Julia, who also attends Summit. She enjoys English class and photography and hopes to pursue a career in interior design or architecture.

She also enjoys travelling with her family, usually to coastal destinations where she gets to spend time on the beach.

Meier actually stays quite busy throughout the school year, starting basketball the day the gymnastics season ends, and then rolling right into the girls soccer season after that.

And, while her thoughts may drift occasionally toward the upcoming basketball season or toward her family trip to a Mexico, she knows her goals for gymnastics.

“I want the team to qualify for state,” she said.
