ARAPAHOE BASIN ” Fifty-seven competitors from around the state came out to A-Basin Saturday morning for the fifth annual Huck, Rock and Roll slopestyle event.

The competition was held in the treeline terrain park and featured three jumps with seven different rails and boxes.

“Basically, we shut down our Treeline Terrain Park, competitors get two runs on jumps, rails, boxes … whatever they want to hit. We judge them and then at the end we award prizes,” said Kimberly Trembearth, marketing coordinator at A-Basin.

Huck, Rock and Roll was an amateur event, but had competitors from ages 10 to 37 years old.

The event also featured a new category of competitors that A-Basin has never included before ” the ski-biking category.

“They called us up and asked if they could compete,” Trembearth said. “We told them they had to have at least five entries to make a category and they did, but we really didn’t know what to expect out of them.”

The Huck, Rock and Roll competition is the first of many more rail jams and events this month at A-Basin.

“This May we will have a rail jam every Saturday in our Treeline Terrain Park and they’re all free. We’ll basically have three or four features. Competitors will just hit them for an hour and we will award prizes.” Trembearth said.

The Basin will also hold their May concert series and festival of brew pubs this month.

With A-Basin being one of the few resorts still open, it’s a unique opportunity for park skiers and riders to compete late in the season.

“The snow is so soft, so it’s cool to just be able to try new things in the spring … things that you really wouldn’t try earlier in the season because you’re afraid of getting hurt,” said Paige Rainear, who placed first in women’s snowboarding. “I like competing in May. It’s warm and it’s fun.”
