Inaugural Breckebeiner 60K set for March 30

BRECKENRIDGE – Taking on the challenge of a 60-kilometer Nordic ski event is a significant feat. Finishing that distance is even more impressive. In the inaugural Breckebeiner 60K in Breckenridge March 30, amateur to Olympic athletes will test their endurance to benefit the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC). The 60K pledge ski will be held in honor of Breckenridge and Frisco Nordic centers president and BOEC founder, Gene Dayton. The event will be a celebration of Dayton’s 60th birthday.

“We are planning a big barbecue with Scottish Highlands beef, elk and salmon for after the race,” Dayton said. “And we’ll have live music and cake for everyone to enjoy.”

Participants also will have the chance to ski with members of the U.S. Olympic Nordic Combined Team, as well as with local and regional ski stars.

Named after the infamous American Birkebeiner Nordic ski race, the Breckebeiner 60K is a pledge event to raise money for the BOEC. Basic entry is $1 per kilometer, and skiers are asked to raise pledges for each kilometer they complete. Individuals (racing solo or as part of a team) who raise more than $250 will receive a free 2003-2004 ski pass for the Breckenridge and Frisco Nordic centers. Top fund raisers will be rewarded with other prizes as well.

The 60K course will follow a scenic 6K loop at the Breckenridge Nordic Center. For more information or to register for the Breckebeiner 60K, call (970) 453-6422 or E-mail boec@boec.org.
