Indoor cycling benefit set for Saturday

BRECKENRIDGE – The bike trails are going to be wet for a while, but pedalers can put in their miles Saturday at the Breckenridge Recreation Center’s indoor mud ride.

The all-day ride is a benefit for Bristlecone Hospice – a nonprofit, home-care agency for families living with a terminal illness – and is open to everyone from die-hard solo riders to teams of eight individuals of any cycling ability.

“They can break any time they want,” said Andrea Groth, fitness and wellness supervisor for the Breck Rec Center. “If you’re an individual riding, that’s a long day.”

No muddiness will prevail on this ride, as all pedalling will be done on stationary bikes inside the gym. The ride begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and continues until 5 p.m. with a break at 12:30 p.m. for a climbing wall demonstration.

“We’re not requiring anyone to have a lot of (cycling) experience,” Groth said. “We’ll have people available to assist new riders. A lot of people are riding in teams for an hour a stretch, so it’s really just like going to a cycling class.”

A minimum donation of $25 is required for individuals doing the indoor ride or $125 for teams, which may have two to eight members. There will be prizes given to the top individual and team fundraisers.

The event will also include giveaways and chair massages. For more information, call the rec center at (970) 453-1743.
