KEYSTONE – Keystone is bringing back a recreational race league, but this year there’s a twist. It’s at night. Every Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m., from Jan. 26 – March 2, skiers, snowboarders or telemarkers can hit the gates as part of a five-person team that must include one female. Scoring is determined by the NASTAR (National Standard Race) system.

The races will last until 8:30 p.m. on the Flying Dutchman trail. After the races, competitors are welcome at the Green Light for apres-ski festivities.”Having the teams race at night adds a fun element,” said Jay Sowers, race manager at Keystone, “and this program really is about fun competition.”

This is one of only two business league series in Summit County this year. Copper Mountain hosts the other biz league series on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m.The Keystone series will cost each five-person team $350 to enter for the 6-race season. The price does not include lift tickets.

Last year Keystone’s biz league was during the day and struggled with turnout. With the races happening in the evening this year, the race department is hoping to attract more people that wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to race.”We already had night skiing, so we wanted to take advantage of that,” said Jillian Becker, Keystone’s race coordinator.Prizes will be given out every week, and at the end of the season, the overall male and female winners will receive a pair of Atomic skis and bindings.
