Keystone to open in grand style

KEYSTONE – Keystone Resort is steering away from a white ribbon-style early season this year. In past seasons, opening day for Keystone, like opening day for many other ski areas, has meant a single, short run packed to the brim with early season skiers and snowboarders.

On Friday, however, Keystone will open for the 2002-03 season with three chair lifts, four runs and top-to-bottom skiing amounting to 2,340 vertical feet.

“It’s huge. People are so excited,” said Keystone spokeswoman Dawn Doty. “You can ski from the top of Keystone on opening day, which hasn’t happened in a long time.”

Keystone officials decided to push back the resort’s opening day to conserve snowmaking water, Doty said. Since September, 34 inches of natural snow has fallen at on the mountain.

“We’ll have more than 80 acres open, where before, we had about 20,” Doty said. “It’s good to see everything so white and have it feel like winter.”

Keystone will open at 8:30 a.m. Friday with the Peru, Montezuma and Discovery lifts. Opened runs will include Haywood, Silverspoon, Frenchman and Discovery. The summit snow depth is 14 inches. The first four skiers will ride up a chair with a disco ball in the spirit of Keystone’s new Party in the Peaks winter program, which in January and February will feature Saturday Night Fever, beer tasting and wine pairing dinner events.

Scheduled to open Nov. 11 are the Ruby lift and the Packsaddle and Mozart trails. The River Run Gondola will be up and running Nov. 27, which is also when night skiing begins. The Outback is scheduled to open in mid-December.
