Kirsten Cooley wins slopestyle title at Junior Nationals

Team Summit’s Kirsten Cooley entered Thursday’s slopestyle finals at the Junior Freeystyle National Championships in second place, needing to land something big to climb up the podium.

And that’s exactly what she did.

Cooley cruised through the Bashor Terrain Park at Steamboat Ski Area with smooth rails and effortless jumps, before stomping the biggest trick of the competition – a flawless double front flip off the third and final booter.

“Kirsten’s performance was truly unparalleled,” said Lailla Matthews, the chief of competition for the event.

And it landed her a gold medal and the national title that goes with it.

Cooley was the only female rider to even attempt the double flip, and Matthews said she only remembered one male rider successfully landing it.

Cooley was Team Summit’s lone competitor in the event.

The national competition continues through the weekend with moguls today and Sunday and aerials on Saturday.
