COLORADO SPRINGS ” The Summit High tennis team wrapped up their season Friday with a third place finish at Fountain Valley High School’s 4A regional tournament.
Playing over two days against seven other teams, the Lady Tigers fought hard, but lost to powerhouse Ralston Valley (winners) and Rock Canyon (second place).
“Rock Canyon came up with a very strong team this year,” Tigers coach Dave Turrin said. “That was the difference between finishing second and third. … It would have been very difficult to beat Ralston, but we put up a good fight.”
According to Turrin, Ralston will be moving up to level 5A next season, making Rock Canyon Summit’s future top competitor.
The last match win, played by No. 1 doubles team Tiana Shelton and Megan Hartman, went to three sets against Harrison to wrap up a third place finish.
Shelton and Hartman ended with a 3-1 record.
No. 1 singles player, Alex Critz-Culp ended 1-2; Megan Hollenback lost her first game, 0-1; and Kali Turrin finished 2-2.
Tandem team Julie and Marie Oberriter ended 2-2; Ashley Dankof and Ali Hartman finished 0-2; and Rosa Foth and Sophia Bolt ended 2-1.
SHS was seeded second and third throughout the competition.
Play was snowed out in Colorado Springs on Thursday, moving the girls to Pueblo to finish their matches. Friday’s competition concluded back at Fountain Valley.
Turrin pointed to the girls’ competitive nature and their ability to bounce back as key reasons for their success on the court this season.
The Lady Tigers will lose six graduating seniors this year: Critz-Culp, Hollenbeck, Shelton, Dankof, Hartman and Marie Oberriter.
“Next year will be a rebuilding year,” he added.
