Lady Tigers fall to Mustangs

summit daily news

ARVADA ” In what Summit High School girls soccer coach Stephanie Johnson called her team’s best performance of the season, the Tigers lost to Ralston Valley 7-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Yes, that’s right. A six-goal loss was Summit’s top match of the year. Forget the four wins. Or the 1-1 tie against Englewood.

Simply scoring against Ralston Valley ” something only three other teams have done in the Mustangs’ 12 matches this season ” merits celebration.

“This team is just incredible to watch,” Johnson said of Ralston Valley, which improved to 11-0-1 overall and 8-0 in the 4A Jeffco League.

Sophomore Hannah Harvey took a second-half assist from Emma Koenig and buried a pretty shot into the right side of the net Wednesday to give Summit (4-6-1, 3-4-1 Jeffco) its only goal.

SHS keeper Emily Hawkins faced shot after shot and, although seven went in (one of which was an own-goal), played an “amazing” match, Johnson said.

“The other team’s coach even came up to me after the game and said how great she thought our goalie played,” Johnson said. “The shots that Ralston Valley scored, no keeper could have gotten.”

After the match, Summit’s players hardly resembled a losing group.

“It seems like a hard loss, but they were just ecstatic,” Johnson said. “They’ve never scored on Ralston Valley, so they were really proud of themselves.”

The Tigers wrap up their regular season on Monday at Conifer, then will play an intrasquad scrimmage at home Thursday to give the players a chance to compete in front of their classmates and friends, since Summit played all of its matches on the road this season.
