Lemon lifts Huskies over Summit

EAGLE-VAIL – Battle Mountain’s soccer game against Summit High School certainly was no Lemon.

J.D. Lemon scored in the 28th minute of the first half and that stood in the Huskies’ 1-0 nonconference win over the Tigers.

“I’m finally getting a good touch on the ball,” Lemon, who’s had goals in consecutive games, said. “The goal was an easy garbage goal. The play that set it up was the thing. Raul (Chavarria) gave it to me and set up my run. Andy (Banner) had a good shot on goal and it was laying right there.”

Battle Mountain (3-2) dominated the first half, while visiting Summit (1-3) controlled the second half. Ironically, both teams played better when they were going into a heavy eastern wind.

“In the first half, we had the wind and we were trying to play through balls,” Summit coach Peter Shafroth said. “The wind was just sending them too far. So we weren’t getting a lot of control. In the second half, we just played a lot more ball control. We still weren’t able to generate enough shots on goal. But we controlled the game a lot better in the second half.”

Summit had several good opportunities in the second half. The best was a shot from Jorge Infante. But his bid for the equalizer was foiled by a good save from Huskies’ keeper Beau Beckley.

Summit faces Kent Denver on Monday.

“They’ve got a lot of speed. They’ve just got a lot of skills,” Shafroth said. “I was the coach there for 18 years. It’s a homecoming of sorts.”
