DEVON O'NEIL

FARMER’S KORNER – The third annual Little Tigers Wrestling Invitational, which attracts more than 200 grappling youth to the Summit High School gym, will take place on Saturday. The tournament is the lone home competition for the Little Tigers club, now in its fifth year. It’s the first of five tournaments that make up the schedule for 10 schools in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain region.”It’s a big one for us,” said Little Tigers coach Jim Melvin. “It’s going to be a three-ring circus.”Competitors from Craig to the Front Range will be competing on Saturday, including 29 from the host club. Summit’s contingent features kindergartners through eighth-graders, though most are on the younger end of that spectrum.Among Melvin’s potential-laden group are standouts Creed Wilson and Willie Girten. Wilson, a Dillon 9-year-old, went undefeated last year and will wrestle at about 60 pounds on Saturday. “He’s a tough little kid,” said Melvin.Girten, of Breckenridge, is 7 and wrestles at about 55 pounds. Divisions are decided by both weight and age, Melvin said. The Little Tigers are looking for volunteers to help with Saturday’s competition, and Melvin said anyone interested can call him at (970) 389-1987.Devon O’Neil can be contacted at (970) 668-3998, ext. 231, or at doneil@summitdaily.com.
