Local mogul skiers thrive in Steamboat

The USSA Rocky Mountain Division Mogul Tour kicked off last weekend at Steamboat on the same site where the U.S. Olympic trials were held two weeks ago.

Team Breckenridge’s top skiers Dylan Walczyk and Alisha Scheifley both won the J2 category on Saturday.

Walczyk skied highly technical turns with good speed for an eighth place overall finish and a personal best score of 23.20. In Sunday’s dual mogul event, Walczyk defeated No. 1 seed Zak Watkins en route to a seventh-place overall finish.

Scheifley also earned strong marks in turns and line for her J2 win and 11th-place overall finish in a deep field that featured U.S. Team skiers Heidi Kloser and Mikaela Matthews. For Scheifley the 19.11 score was not far off her personal best of 19.98.

Other Team Breck skiers: Kaitlyn Harrell was first in J4, Bruce Perry Jr finished second in J3s, Lindsey Eckhoff was third in J4, Sarah Johnson was fifth in J2, Sean Scanlan wound up eighth in J2, Gabe Johnson finished 10th in J3, Bryce Sawhney was 14th in J3, and Alex DeBonville placed 18th in J3.

The RMD mogul tour continues this week with events at Aspen Highlands. Team Breckenridge hosts the tour with mogul and dual mogul events at the end of the month on Jan. 30 and Jan. 31 at Breckenridge.
