FARMER’S KORNER – Talk about lower than low. Breckenridge native Katie Uhlaender, the No. 2 skeleton racer in the U.S., had her only competition sled – one worth almost $4,000 – stolen from in front of Summit High School Friday afternoon.

Uhlaender had flown to Colorado to give motivational speeches at the high school. The 20-year-old Summit High graduate left the sled just outside the front door of the building when she went back in to get her car keys. When she came back out, the sled was gone. “That sled is like my child,” Uhlaender said. “It takes a long time to get used to a sled.”

Uhlaender will compete in the U.S. skeleton time trials in October in Calgary. If she finishes in the top two at the trials, she will race on the World Cup circuit. From there, she hopes to make the Olympic team.”I’m completely self funded, and it’s not like I have $4,000 to go get a new sled,” Uhlaender said. “I’m broke.”

If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of the sled, call Summit High School at (970) 547-9311, or Uhlaender at (970) 333-9652.Andy Frame can be reached at (970) 668-3998, ext. 236, or at aframe@summitdaily.com.
