Local team struggles in first day of ultimate tourney

BRECKENRIDGE – The Breckenridge Ultimate Frisbee Club played well against the tough teams and not so well against the lesser teams Saturday at its annual Lungbuster Tournament.

The result was an 0-4 record and a trip straight to the beer bracket.

“We just have a lot of new players,” said James Lee, himself a new member of the Breck club. “A lot of these teams have played together for a long time.”

The Breckenridge club, calling itself the Couch Potatoes for the tournament, do have a core group that has played together for several years. But it had trouble competing Saturday.

“We have some really awesome players, but the key is playing awesome as a team,” Lee said, “and not getting discouraged when things go wrong.”

As a sign of hope, the Couch Potatoes bounced back after losing their first three matches – one by giving up a late lead. They played their best game against the tournament’s No. 1 seed and last year’s winner, the Palisade Peaches, in their last game of the day.

“We didn’t get blown out by anybody,” said Breckenridge veteran Gene Gamber. “It’s just that those guys play a lot more tournaments than we do.”

The Couch Potatoes enter today’s action hoping to make some headway in the beer bracket, or consolation bracket. Also today, the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be played.

Twenty teams are competing in the two-day event. All proceeds go to the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center.
