Love Me Tender Snowshoe Adventure set for Saturday at SHS

The Love Me Tender Snowshoe Adventure is back for a third year, and Saturday’s event is shaping up to be the biggest yet.

Darren Brumgardt, who coaches multiple sports at Summit High, started the Love Me Tender as just a 5k snowshoe run to serve as a fundraiser for the Tiger track and field team.

Since then, the race has expanded to three distances (2k, 5k and 10k) and is sanctioned U.S. Snowshoe Association regional qualifier (10k) as well as serving as the Colorado High School Snowshoe State Championship.

And it still is an SHS fundraiser, donating all of this year’s proceeds to the three-time defending state champion girls’ rugby team.

“It’s becoming a big event,” Brumgardt said, adding that more than 50 people and four high school teams have already signed up for it. “I’m just really happy with how everyone comes out and supports us.”

The courses take runners from the high school on a trail through Farmer’s Korner and up into the Iron Springs open space area. Brumgardt said the course is nearly 60 percent downhill or flat, making it a little easier than some other trails in the county.

“The trails are packed down really well,” he said. “It’s a really nice trail, and there’s only two or three hills, which is weird for around here.”

Registration is open through tonight online at There will also be day-of registration at the high school for $5 more.

The event will also feature what Brumgardt called “the best door prizes in the county,” which include Avalanche tickets and a two-night stay at Beaver Creak.

Also, Powerbar is supplying the event with over $400 worth of products.
