Minor team qualifies for state tourney

FRISCO ” The Summit County Minor All-Star team claimed a major victory on Sunday, beating Grand County in an exciting come-from-behind 22-12 victory to punch their ticket for the upcoming state tournament.

After claiming a convincing 27-6 win over Grand County on Saturday, the Minors showed their prowess at the plate once again on Sunday, coming back from a big 9-1 deficit to end the game in just four innings and become one of only four teams to qualify for the state tourney, which begins July 26 in Frisco.

“I am very proud of the team,” coach Karl Bierbaum said. “We played really well two games in a row.”

Although the win was certainly a full-team effort, a few ballplayers stood out for their awesome accomplishments on the diamond.

Cord Wilson came in in relief and silenced the Grand County bats while his Summit County teammates mounted their impressive comeback.

The Minors had a stellar day with the sticks as Riley Miller, Jack Anderson, George Richard and Kellen Wade all displayed big bats in the outing.

Miller led the squad with a pair of triples, a single and a walk, while Anderson belted his second home run in as many days.

Richard also went deep in the win and Wade come through with the game-tying single.
