Local golfer Dylan Mitchell qualified at the Callaway Junior World Championships, which took place on June

6-7 at Pelican Lakes Golf Course in Windsor.

Eighty-six of the top junior golfers competed for two coveted qualifier spots and an invitation to the upcoming Callaway Junior World Championships, which take place July 10-13 at infamous Torrey Pines South, in San Diego – home of the 2008 U.S. Open, where Tiger Woods defeated Roco Mediate in a playoff.

Past champions of the Callaway Junior World Championships include notable names, such as Tiger Woods, Jason Day, Craig Stadler, David Toms, John Cook and Nick Price.

Although high winds of more than 30 mph and much tougher than usual tee placements made play difficult on the first day of the tournament, Mitchell was able to shoot a 74, which was the low round of the day, giving him a one shot lead.

On Day 2, overcast skies and wind early in the morning still affected play, but Mitchell’s momentum helped him to start the round strong at 3 under in his first five holes, and he finished with a 1-under-par 71, which put him in second place overall and only one of two prestigious qualifying positions for the upcoming championships.

Mitchell is entering his senior year at Summit High School and will be entertaining options to attend a university as part of a collegiate golf program.

Mitchell has a rigorous schedule this June including the Optimist Qualifier at Flatirons in Boulder on June 13, the Colorado Junior Stroke Play Tournament at Keystone Ranch on June 18 and the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier at Fox Hill in Longmont on June 25.
