Mob down Main for Go Skateboarding Day 2016 in Breckenridge (video)

For the last 20 years I have been carrying around with me a piece of wood from my childhood. When combined with four wheels, it can do an almost infinite number of things.

This past Tuesday, the 21st of June, was Go Skateboarding Day. To celebrate the unofficial holiday, the Lumberyard Snow and Skate shop in downtown Breck and DC Shoes hosted the DC Global Skate Jam at the Breckenridge Skate Park. The local skate community came out in force for a fun-filled day, with barbecue, a best trick contest and giveaways. Congrats to Kaleb Moses, who won best trick for the boys.

Later on in the day, after I took a trip to the new Vail skate park, some 50 people amassed at the Lumberyard to skate down Main Street as a squad. It was really something to see the local skate community gather together to celebrate this piece of wood with four wheels and mob down Main. We are part of something that starts under our feet and goes around the entire the world — a global community.

A sales pitch for skateboarding

I believe if only everyone had a skateboard we could end all war, so I wrote an advertisement for the product:

Ladies and gentleman, ladies and gentlemen… Let me introduce you to the product that has shaped me as the person I am today, a product that has saved the lives of millions. Sword for a king, bread to civilians…

Over the years it has been my main vehicle, and also a reliable work commuter and fun-mobile.

It has been my flag, my talk, my locked. I take it when I travel. I can roll my bag on it when I get unraveled.

It has been my rock.

It laser flips, it kicks, it lips, it does disasters.

What is and what is after.

It shove’s it.

All girls and boys: This is not your granddaddy’s toy.

Helps one stay young, have fun, make runs, get sun. It takes me to work. I use it after work when I get done.

The puzzle and a project. A game with no object, no winners, salvation for the sinner. Self flagellation… for beginners.

No tryouts. Do not use in the rain but you never have to dry out.

It showed me the light. It saved my life when in a time of crisis, get 500-plus likes with.

My medium, my weapon, my direction.

It always keeps me honest. You cannot fake it.

Under my feet and between my ears.

Skateboarding is a friend I’ve grown up with, the type of friend you are lucky to have met, the type of friend that gets you into places and fast tracks you with people — the people that eventually become your people.

The thing about a skateboard is that it is an inanimate object. It requires you to activate it. Once you learn to, it opens up the world to endless friends and possibilities. You can animate other objects like concrete, ledges and curbs and stairs. You can skate mountains and handrails out of the window of a car or create pools out of your mashed potatoes. You get a lifetime membership and access to endless opportunity, all for under $100, plus your devotion.

So, friends: Who wants to go skate?
