Mountain Invitational softball tournament set for Saturday

SILVERTHORNE – The 22nd annual Mountain Invitational softball tournament hosted by the Summit County Softball League begins Saturday morning with a smaller field than in past years.

As of Thursday, six teams were scheduled to play a modified round robin at Blue River Park. The tournament has been a two-day affair in the past, but with dwindling entrants, it has become a Saturday-only event.

“We’re still holding out that a couple of teams will call,” said tournament director Steve Wilkins. “There’s a chance we’ll get more.”

So far, local teams Ski Country Antiques, Country Kitchen and Blue Valley Liquors as well as a handful of Front Range teams, including the Rude Dawgs and Master Collision, are entered. Registration will be accepted today for late-comers.

Each team will play four games.

The July 19-20 Spider Stephens Memorial Tournament remains Summit County Softball’s most prestigious event, although, according to Wilkins, participation in the sport as a whole is down.

“Slow-pitch softball has taken a step back,” he said. “It has taken a big hit in the last few years. But it’s not a dying sport. It goes in cycles.”
